Support Through Difficult Transitions & Grief
When we are grieving, it can feel like the world has turned upside down -- like we've forgotten who we are and where we belong. And while resilience skills can be built over time, we need support and a safe space in which we can honestly acknowledge our losses.
Unwelcome transitions are devastating and disorienting; affecting every aspect of your life - mind, body, spirit, relationships, work, finances, and faith.
While grief is the normal and natural response to loss, many people require professional support when the burden of emotions and responsibilities feels like too much to bear.

What is coaching?
Coaching emerged as an approach to help people maximize their potential as they navigate personal and professional goals. It’s a partnership in which a coach taps into their client’s resourcefulness, values, talents, and beliefs to help them overcome obstacles and adversity, and generate compelling action plans to meet goals and to build a life worth living.
Can't anyone call themselves a coach?
Unfortunately, yes. However, "coaches" with minimal or no training give the rest of us a bad rap. That's why you should ask your prospective coach if they are an International Coach Federation Member and/or Certified. If they are, that means they adhere to proven coaching methodologies, have taken Accredited Coaching Training Programs, abide by the highest code of professional ethics and accountability, and have mentor coaching and supervision.
What qualifies you as a coach?
Apart from having coached and mentored dozens of clients and colleagues over the past six years, I have over 400 hours of formal training in Applied Positive Psychology, Coaching Psychology, Transition Management, Grief Support, and Life Reentry®. I've had mentor coaching and supervision and continue my professional development and education through active participation in the Connecticut Chapter of the International Coach Federation. Additionally, I am pursuing my Masters of Science degree in Applied Positive Psychology & Coaching Psychology at the University of East London.
Why do people hire a coach?
I can't speak for everyone, however, most of my clients find me in the process of rebuilding their lives after adversity, loss, or unwelcome transition.
They want to re-engage with life to create more:
- Vitality, happiness, and well-being
- Rewarding relationships: personally and professionally
- Prosperous and purposeful work
- Opportunities to create, innovate, and impact the world
- Tools, systems, and support to help them live more wholeheartedly
My clients tend to be courageous, honest and self-reflective high-achievers who have been knocked around by life, but who are still compelled to live wholeheartedly with joy and passion.
Isn't coaching just therapy in disguise?
No. Although both therapy and coaching work to enable clients to make positive changes and become more productive, coaching is a distinct discipline. It is not therapy in disguise. Coaches have specialized training, as do therapists.
Coaching tends to be future-oriented and focuses on how to work towards goals. Results can be measured with key performance metrics and specific outcomes. The coaching relationship can be long-term or short-term.
Coaches are not health care professionals, though they can contribute to greater well-being by helping clients achieve their goals and find greater meaning, purpose, and vitality in life.
Coaches also help patients cultivate self-awareness, self-compassion, and self-care and to create better habits and more empowering beliefs that support their dreams and goals for a better future.
Should I see a therapist or a coach?
Only you know the answer to that. And, it's important to note that a coach is not qualified to diagnose or treat psychological problems. A good coach will refer clients who are struggling with such issues to a therapist.
Therapy, AKA counseling or psychotherapy, is a long-term process in which a licensed clinician works with patients to diagnose illnesses and pathologies and to help patients resolve problems, behaviors, relationship issues, and any corresponding physical and emotional responses that affect well-being.
Many people who seek out a therapist do not have mental health challenges, though some do. Oftentimes therapists focus on the subconscious mind and how past experiences and behaviors are influencing current well-being. Energy and attention are devoted to why certain beliefs, behaviors, and emotions are arising, with the goal of changing beliefs, behaviors, and patterns of response in the present.
If you have some deep-rooted pain that is preventing you from engaging in life the way you want to, therapy may be a good avenue for healing and forward motion.
Therapy is often very helpful for people who are experiencing depression, phobia, trauma, complicated grief, addiction, and destructive behavior. It often helps people move from a place of floundering to one of functioning again.
Comparatively, coaching tends to focus on moving people from a place of functioning to one of flourishing. While coaching can uncover subconscious fears and beliefs that are driving behavior, the coaching focus tends to be more future-oriented and on actionable steps towards achieving specific goals.
Coaching often helps people move from an existence of functioning to one of flourishing. In my work, I focus on the neuroscience of beliefs, and how that affects emotions and corresponding behaviors towards sustainable habit change.
In this way, coaching and therapy offer different but complementary approaches to well-being.
If you want to cultivate more clarity, conviction, and courage about how to live wholeheartedly, coaching may be a great option.
Why did you become a Certified Coach rather than a Licensed Therapist or Counselor?
I chose to become a Certified Coach because it's a better fit for my personality and belief system.
My passion comes from focusing my energy and attention on everything that is right with people, and all that is possible in the world -- even, and especially, when life gets tough.
To be clear, I'm not the Pollyanna type and I don't believe "the universe is unfolding as it should". In fact, I bristle at platitudes about positive thinking.
At the same time, research shows that optimism, gratitude, open perspectives, and other character strengths go a long way in helping people grow in resilience, agency, and well-being -- even in the face of adversity.
I knew if I became a therapist or counselor, I would spend a tremendous amount of time studying pathologies, maladaptive behaviors, and psychological abnormalities in an effort to help people "function normally".
What I really want to do is study how to help people flourish. That's why I became a Certified Positive Psychology Coach.
Finally, I became a coach so I could offer programs and services online that would reach people around the country and the world. To my knowledge, there is no global "licensing" standard for therapists and counselors, however, the International Coach Federation does offer a global standard for excellence in coaching.
What does a coach do?
When we think about coaching, the first thing that comes to mind is an athletic coach – someone who targets specific areas for growth, fosters self-awareness and motivation, taps into the power of the mind and visualization to strengthen the mind-body connection, and provides accountability.
As a resilience coach, I do much of the same work, but with a focus on whatever area of life a client wants to see changes: relationships, finances, career, health, learning, play/leisure, contribution to the community, etc.
I’m trained to listen intuitively, ask insightful questions, observe patterns of thought/behavior that are hindering progress, help clients uncover, articulate and live from their deepest strengths and values, use their skills/gifts to create more meaning and momentum, and to identify conflicting beliefs or priorities that are preventing true well-being and contentment.
Through mindful awareness and deliberate action plans, I help clients set meaningful, achievable goals to live a more healthy, balanced, joyful, and integrated life.
I provide accountability and support so clients experience new self-awareness, new ways of thinking, heightened motivation, and pathways to long-term fulfillment and contribution.
How does a coaching session work?
Prior to our sessions, my clients fill out a Strategy Session Form. This sets the agenda for what we plan to accomplish so by the end of our time together, you have an action plan to meet your goal. A goal might be something practical like planning a career change, life transition, or crafting a time-management strategy; or a goal might something more abstract, like how to overcome limiting beliefs or mind-chatter, or how to cultivate self-discipline and make healthier, more empowering life choices. Oftentimes, people have ambitious goals that simply need to be broken down into actionable steps.
During client sessions, we then work together to identify habits, beliefs, and behaviors that are no longer serving you and we develop new patterns of thought and being that support your passions and vision for your life.
For clients who are interested in learning more about the science of well-being, I integrate practices and principles from the field of applied positive psychology whenever it’s appropriate and helpful to your growth and personal progress. I often reference videos, recommended readings, and provide reflective exercises as “homework”.
As a resilience coach, I work with clients who are in transition to help shift their mindset, manage anxiety, overcome overwhelm, and start re-imagining a future in which they can truly flourish.
What is expected of clients?
I ask my clients to:
- Show up to each session at our scheduled time (even when it has been a tough week)
- Approach the work with courage, curiosity, and whole-heartedness
- Keep a journal of ideas, questions, goals, and accomplishments
- Take ownership and responsibility for growth and progress
- Commit to doing homework based on your goals
- Rescheduling make-up sessions within 30 days of missed sessions

What is the cost of coaching?
My rates for three-month to six-month packages can be found here (the cost per session decreases when you book more sessions).
Why a three-month commitment?
I ask my clients to make at least a three-month commitment since it takes time and action to see results and to embrace positive changes. Change is inherently challenging and uncomfortable, even when we want it!
Developing new habits and new ways of thinking takes time and energy and focus. Commitment and perseverance are necessary.
You wouldn’t sign-up for a weight loss program, tutor, or personal training and expect results in a month. The same is true for coaching.
We can talk weekly, every other week, or once each month, based on your goals, availability, and budget. The important thing is to make a commitment to progressive growth.
What happens if we don’t use all the sessions within a three-month or six-month period?
If sessions need to be rescheduled due to illness, vacation, or other circumstances, we will aim to reschedule within 30 days of missed sessions. For clients who do not use all their sessions within the agreed upon coaching period, the duration of the coaching agreement can be extended up to one additional month.
What grief support do you offer kids?
I offer a program entitled, When Children Grieve, that is designed for parents and caregivers to attend. Although children do not attend this program, it provides tools and information that empowers adults to help kids navigate grief, adversity, and transition in healthy and holistic ways.
Good Grief offers excellent resources for families and educators who are supporting children through grief.
Comfort Zone Camp is another favorite non-profit helping kids cope.
Do you have other programs just for kids?
In an ideal world, parents, caregivers or teachers would be present too so the learning and application can continue beyond the series, and my contact with the kids.
What age range are the GoZen! and GoStrengths! programs suitable for?
Programming was originally created for children ages 7-15ish. However there are youth from ages 4-25 using the Go programs right now because these life skills are universal.
Will it work for my child?
GoZen! provides informational videos, followed up by facilitated conversations to teach kids research-based coping, resilience, and happiness skills.
I am not a medical professional, so we always recommend seeing your doctor about any condition you believe your child may be experiencing. That said, the skills kids learn in the programs can be applied in a variety of domains–they are life skills. By using videos and following up with conversations, the information is provided in an engaging format and a lot of kids respond to it because it’s relatable and easy to understand.

What’s the difference between GoZen! and GoStrengths!?
GoZen! focuses on anxiety relief for children. If your child is experiencing anxiety, then GoZen! is the recommended program.
GoStrengths! is a comprehensive social and emotional learning program.
How long does it take to go through GoZen!?
It’s a six-module series. Sometimes we meet once a week for six weeks. Sometimes the sessions are spread out a little more than that.

I am seeing a therapist or counselor. Why would I need more grief support?
Maybe you don't. You're the only one who knows. The question is, are you making progress? Finding hope? Healing?
Many of my clients see therapists or counselors and I encourage them to continue. Some choose to participate in my programs too because they offer a different vantage point, a sense of community, and a focused way of exploring a topic that is messy and unpredictable.
There's something powerful about working through a method/program each week with an agenda and learning outcomes.
Whether you're interested in the Wholehearted Healing Program or the Grief Recovery Method, I offer limited-duration programs with specific outcomes so that you can measure your progress and walk away seeing, feeling, and experiencing the world in a new way.
I can't afford grief support programs. What options do I have?
I offer two scholarships for each Grief Recovery Method series I facilitate. I also run two groups annually by donation.

I still require scholarship recipients to purchase the book and to make an investment in healing by donating money to the scholarship fund or a favorite non-profit, as you're able.

GATHERING, USE AND DISCLOSURE OF NON-PERSONALLY-IDENTIFYING INFORMATION
Users of the Website Generally
“Non-Personally-Identifying Information” is information that, without the aid of additional information, cannot be directly associated with a specific person. “Personally-Identifying Information,” by contrast, is information such as a name or email address that, without more, can be directly associated with a specific person. Like most website operators, Company gathers from users of the Website Non-Personally-Identifying Information of the sort that Web browsers, depending on their settings, may make available. - Mobile Analytics. We use mobile analytics software to allow us to better understand the functionality of our mobile software on your phone. This software may record information, such as how often you use the application, the events that occur within the application, aggregated usage, performance data and where the application was downloaded from. We do not link the information we store within the analytics software to any Personally-Identifying Information you submit within the mobile application.
We may provide you the option to connect your account on the Website to your account on some social networking sites for the purpose of logging in, uploading information or enabling certain features on the Website. When logging in using your social network credentials, we may collect the Personally-Identifying Information you have made publicly available on the social networking site, such as your name, profile picture, cover photo, username, gender, friends network, age range, locale, friend list and any other information you have made public. Once connected, other users may also be able to see information about your social network, such as the size of your network and your friends, including common friends. By connecting your account on the Website to your account on any social networking site, you hereby consent to the continuous release of information about you to us.
