The reality is that 70% of workers are disengaged from their jobs. They’re distracted, depressed, stressed, bored, and inefficient – and it’s costing U.S. employers billions of dollars annually.

Disengagement can result in: lost productivity, less innovation, combative employees, increased absenteeism, increased stress, relationship dysfunction, high turnover, and an unhappy, unhealthy, disgruntled workforce.

Disengagement can happen because of:

  • Challenging work relationships where people don’t feel heard, respected, or understood
  • Lack of purpose, meaning, or accomplishment at work
  • Communication challenges and/or unclear expectations
  • Chronic stress
  • Personal issues at home that carry into the workplace (transitions, conflicts, grief, etc.)

There is a better way. You can help employees engage more deeply in their work by offering programs that help people:

  • Tap into shared values
  • Strengthen relationships
  • Grow in resilience
  • Cultivate character strengths like integrity, social intelligence, and perseverance
  • Communicate more effectively
  • Experience more innovation, collaboration, and satisfaction at work
  • Feel well-supported professionally and through personal transitions which ultimately garners more professional loyalty and commitment

How can employers help employees re-engage with their work?

Employers can re-engage their teams by tapping into people’s values and beliefs, by cultivating their strengths, focusing their mindset, and fostering an environment that produces healthier, happier relationships.

Employers can work with me to co-create customized workshops or retreats to meet the greatest areas of need and opportunity in the workplace.

Create a Culture of Connection

A Compassionate Community of Colleagues

Bereavement and grief is estimated to cost U.S. companies and organizations over $75 Billion in combined annual revenue each year.

By daring to speak grief aloud rather than avoiding it, organizations can provide employees the skills and resources needed to navigate loss in a way that increases resilience and builds  a more compassionate environment.

Here's what organizational leaders gain by offering grief education and support:

  • Enhanced morale
  • Healthier relationships
  • Better communication
  • Reduced burnout
  • Improved productivity
  • Reduced turnover and absenteeism
Grief is an inevitable part of life. Statistics show that 1 in 4 employees is grieving at any given time.* But few people know how to support one another in a meaningful way through grief experiences.
Unresolved grief can lead to physical and emotional costs including recurring illness, depression, and cardiovascular risk.
The Grief Recovery Institute documented the negative impact grief has on workplace productivity:
  • An average annual cost of $75 billion in lost productivity, lost business, and poor performance for all grief-inducing experiences
  • An estimated 30 work days lost each year by each employee experiencing grief with no support from coworkers or managers; 20% of employees will continue losing workdays for more than a year

* The Grief Recovery Institute Educational Foundation. (2003). Grief Index: The Hidden Annual Costs of Grief in America’s Workplace

Be Aware: There are many types of grief experiences, including:

  • Divorce or the end of a relationship
  • Estrangement
  • Addictions in the family
  • Loss of health or health issues among loved ones
  • Moving or changing communities
  • Family conflicts
  • Loss of safety/security

... and a multitude of other adversities.

Unresolved grief can affect an employee, and by extension, an organization via:

  • Lack of concentration
  • Increased absenteeism
  • Decreased productivity
  • Hampered capacity for innovation, creativity, and problem-solving
  • Work errors that have a financial impact
  • Reduced morale and motivation
  • Conflict of subordinate-manager interests
  • Cost of hiring and training new employees
  • Disruption to customers, suppliers, and business partners
  • Emotional outbursts
  • Impeded memory
  • Mood swings and behavioral changes

Programs for Grief Support Include:

Dare to Speak Grief: Lunch & Learn

There are healthy and unhealthy ways to grieve.  Unfortunately grief is a largely misunderstood and mishandled part of Western culture.  People all too often avoid talking about loss, adversity, and struggle, and frequently try to ignore or numb the pain instead. This distances us from one another and exacerbates grief and its accompanying effects.

This 1-hour presentation provides a general understanding of what grief is, what grief does to our minds and bodies, and the emotional and social impact of grief.  It also helps participants recognize complicated grief and when to seek help for themselves or a colleague.

During this workshop participants will learn what "healthy grieving" looks like as they move towards healing and living a wholehearted life after loss.

Peer Grief Support Workshop: Cultivating Connection (2 Hours)

Do you know what to say to someone in grief, or do you just feel awkward and fumble with your words? Do you know specific things you can do to be helpful,  or do you offer vague assistance, like "Call me if there's anything I can do."?

During this interactive two-hour workshop participants will:

  • Learn what to say and what not to say to someone who is struggling.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of normal grief symptoms & patterns of experience.
  • Learn how to create a supportive environment for coworkers who are experiencing loss, adversity, and grief.
  • Recognize complicated grief and when to seek help.
  • Learn how to handle special dates such as holidays and anniversaries.
  • Receive training, skills, and resources needed to successfully manage their own grief experiences
  • Cultivate compassionate listening skills.
